sutcliffe jugend!

The great thing about noise gigs is how hard I can look in the face of hideous and punishing frequencies. It's not cos I'm 'core (although I am), but because of this almost total deafness I have in my right ear - somehow the mono effect negates the pain of the noise (I can tell it's painful cos of the way people screw up their faces and stick their fingers in their ears, the wusses).

so, spent the previous evening in the company of the splendid Martin from Beyond the Implode RIP (whom I hope got home ok as we lost him at about 6am), k-punk, czukay (not the Can one, perhaps fortunately), several stern-looking Germans in Nazi gear, a fat chick with the legend 'Wagner was Right' emblazened across her back, and a series of 'noise' acts (Emil Beaulieau, Prurient, Birds of Delay, someone called Gront (?) and the sublime Jessica Rylan).

SJ themselves were a budget Whitehouse, with less neuro-linguistic programming. Lots of shouting about people's mothers and how religion was like, not cool, and stuff. The other acts were either fat, bald, or both (apart from Birds of Delay and Prurient whom I missed, the former of which czukay says provided a very interesting ten minutes of rumbling bass, strange vocals and so on, the latter an energetic microphone-smashing routine).

Jessica Rylan, the total highlight, however - even better than the last show. Communing with her weird tone-and-pulse-generating box in some kind of unholy librarian-meets-machine alliance, plaintive feedback-stuttering reaching levels of punitive innovation that totally mesmerised...and I'm interviewing her today too, so soon you'll all be able to know what she's into, horrah!
