Consciousness Explained [Daniel C. Dennett, 1991 p58 footnote]

A neurosurgeon once told me about operating on the brain of a young man with epilepsy. As is customary in this kind of operation, the patient was wide awake, under only local anasthesia, while the surgeon delicately explored his exposed cortex, making sure that the parts tentatively to be removed were not absolutely vital by stimuulating them electrically and asking the patient what he experienced. Some stimulations provoked visual flashes or hand-raisings, others a sort of buzzing sensation, but one spot produced a delighted response from the patient: "It's 'Outta Get Me' by Guns N' Roses, my favourite heavy metal band!"

I asked the neurosurgeon if he had asked the patient to sing or hum along with the music, since it would be fascinating to learn how "high fidelity" the provoked memory was. Would it be in exactily the same key and tempo as the record? Such a song (unlike "Silent Night") has one canonical version, so we could simply have superimposed a recording of the patient's humming with the standard record and compared the results. Unfortunatedly, even though a tape recorder had been running during the operation, the surgeon hadn't asked the partient to sing along. "Why not?" I asked, and he replied "I hate rock music!"

Later in the conversation the neurosurgeon happened to remark that he was going to have to operate again on the same young man, and I expressed the hope that he would just check to see if he could restimulate the rock music, and this time to ask the fellow to sing along. "I can't do it," replied the neurosurgeon, "since I cut out that part." "It was part of the epileptic focus?" I asked, and he replied. "No, I already told you -- I hate rock music!"

And now it's time to get the hair piss back to work. (To get back to work where everything still sounds all sharp. Out of tune. In an uplifting yet still uncomfortable way.) Time to finish something.

I just renamed one track from Ezgic (Ezgi was a girl, Ezgi means 'music'. It wasn't the least obvious title for something) to "Trézgi Fenom" (incorporating two painful relationships, "Alt Gr"+E, something from the book I'm currently reading "Consciousness Explained By Daniel C. Dennett", "Grand Theft Auto - Vice City" and the Vietnam war). (I didn't go to 'nam, and don't know much about it, so it's clearly a pretentious title).

That reminds me, I was going to post a footnote from that book (even though I find it's tone and aims fairly annoying).

The other song "Scottmachine2" (because it used a sample from Raymond Scott) I have renamed "Unitiator Demtex Pathborg".

Didn't make it into music work until 11:30am today. So I have to keep going till 7:30 tonight. Feeling aimless, but sticking with it all the same. Being a professional. It's sweltering here in Brixton. And the wind just blew my ashtray all over my keyboard. I think it'll be fine though! I also snapped the top string of my cello so I have an injury to show for today's efforts already!

The original point of writing here was to point you to this fellow's book reviews. Primarily the Gödel, Escher, Bach review.

Professionalism...
... is nigh on impossible where music is concerned. Relationships get too complicated for the objective formalisations used so effectively in the business world. Passion invites frustration. Hoping invites disappointment. Small tasks are cultivated by time and inactivity to become monstrously huge and terrifying. So professionalism is where I will go now. I will place an entry in this Blog every music morning before I start working (Thursdays and every other Monday are looking like the only ones I have any hope of rigidly adhering to though) to prove that I am out of bed, and to prostrate myself for your punishments should I fail to do so. But 1.5 working days per week is a lot better than approximately 3 frustrating hours per week, which is roughly where I am at the moment.
Watch this space tomorrow and on Monday, as these are the days I have set as the days that will be the days that I will work.
