How about I write a blog entry. It's been a while.

Pith
I don't like being called a 'customer' in announcements on the tube. You can call me a passenger. And I don't like it when they read out their announcements from the sheet they've been given in the passive voice, e.g. "Customers are to be advised..." And I don't like it when I've been sitting on a delayed train for 15 minutes and they're still pressing the button to announce "we are currently operating a good service on the Victoria line". Yeh - that one pisses me off bad. It's bad enough when it's just sort of annoying, but when it's a complete lie, I want to hit people.

Etc...

Music
I need to go and see more bands. And buy more music. Okay, that was easier than I thought it would be; there are a couple of things on Friday that look interesting, that I found via noiseloop.com.

What's next?
Well.. I had the uncommon feeling this Monday of having more money than I know what to do with. So it's gotta be time to do some serious investing. In me, and people that want to board my wagon. I want to do a regular night somewhere. Play my set. Get lots of experience of the solo performy thing - gauging audience reactions better, fitting into a given context, getting comfortable enough to start thinking about lighting and stuff. Playing to an audience that has some idea of what to expect.

Given the current overwhelming flabberghasting stupidity of the world - Bush, the pointless destruction of Fallujah, the shamelessly biased and obscuring reporting on it, even on Radio 4, where I thought they'd know a bit better... - given all this, I think I may be open to a political undercurrent to proceedings - some real-world-meat behind some cool looking flyers. We need a name, a venue, an approach. Maybe some brainstorming would help at this point. Futuristic / transhumanistic-extropianism-meets-angry-political-frustration. Somehow.

Back to work
This contract is looking fairly ongoing at the moment. I'm having problems with Visual Studio though. It won't let me debug the project I want to work on. Bah.

Time to mention the things I've worked on over the last couple of months:

An intranet reporting application for Berne Union - using C#.NET, Crystal Reports, MS SQL Server, Sharepoint and Visual Studio.

A proof-of-concept database application for BT Wholesale, using MS Access (creating some slick looking protracted-calculation-based customer research reports).

The public website for Clifford Chance. Using Visual Basic.NET, SQL Server, a bespoke XML/XSL-driven content management system; lots of HMTL, CSS, JavaScript etc.. It looks nice. [Note that the site I have linked is NOT the site I worked on! It's the old one. Until, hopefully, the 29th of this month...]

Not sure what the next thing will be. I'll let you know if you are interested..

Anyway. Back to "Error while trying to run the project: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Could not start ASP.NET or ATL Server debugging. Verify that ASP.NET or ATL Server is correctly installed on the server."

It is correctly installed, I tell you! It it! It works in my other project! Bucking Fug.

Did you use any flash on the Clifford Chance site? Looks pretty nice.

Incidentally, I'm getting the exact same error from Visual Studio -- "Error while trying to run the project: Unable to start debugging on the web sever...". Did you solve this problem? I'm almost to the point of backing up all my data and reinstalling VS.NET.

Thanks Chris..
There's only the Flash map on the Clifford Chance site (it has an html alternative thing with dropdowns if you don't have Flash, too!).

I really can't remember how I fixed that debugging problem - it was a while ago and I can't even remember what project I had it on.

Actually, consulting the resourcing system, I can see it was BU. Which mean I must have... bah.. can't remember.

You probably fixed it by now anyway.

I had the same problem with ASP.net debugging and tried all the IIS restart solutions to no avail. I removed ASP.net 1.1 Hotfix but then looked into the KB article associated with it and found the answer. Got to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887219 for a list of issues that the hotfix creates and this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894670/ to sort the specific problem. VS.net must create a virtual directory with a trailing \ so instead of a virtual directory named mysite it creates \mysite which is the reason you can't debug or view the page. I removed the virtual folder it created (be careful as removing it placed my whole app in the recycle bin - which I then restored) and set up a new virtual folder of the same name via IIS myself. This works a treat. I've had this problem for ages on and off and have wiped my system in the past to do a clean install only to find the problem happen again. Thank god I found out why finally. :) Hope this helps others!

Gig

Yeah I played. Overall response was favourable, although I didn't get much of a sense that people were enjoying it as I was peering out into the audience.. I rushed through it a bit too quickly. Just as I had been training myself not to.

An empty Lincoln Lounge. Not the night of the gig. Like the recording.

Unfortunately, the recording failed. Don't fret though, I will put up a substitute; the last run through I did before I took it on stage. The only difference between this recording and the live performace is that I give the tracks a lot more room to breathe here, and I've got the mute in the trumpet. If you saw the gig, you may be able to imagine my movements as I recorded this. Frantic, exhausting, exacting movements. Great fun...

The Smunk Set : November 2004

It's a Real Media file. Get the free player from here. Excuse the sound quality (not that such a thing should count).
