This reminds me of a tv series they had about Italy a few years ago. Three 'goth' girls had killed a nun, and the press started jumping up and down about Marilyn Manson and his pernicious effect on the trio.

In the end it turned out that the girls couldn't speak a word of English...trying to demonstrate the influence of the lyrics thus proved somewhat difficult.

This seems another imported American trend. I used to believe only in the U.S. could anyone find some daft old prancing prankster like Manson to be genuinely scarey. Over here, everyone would just mistake him for some guy who tag teamed with Catweazel and Kendo Nagasaki on Saturday teatime wrestling or something like that.

but when you look at the case (Scotland Today covers the main points) and subtract some of the rubbish that you have already identified. Its a pretty thin case imho. Being so high profile you also guess that they threw a lot of resources at it.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who is shocked at this conviction, as far as I can see there was NO evidence - just a load of speculation. Check out the stephen dowler case (bakewell tart murder) because this has striking similarities. BTW I'm not from the area or under the age of 40...!!

Hello, my name's Lynsey I'm fourteen years old and I am a 'goth' I am writing to say that it is ridiculous how people are reacting towards the Jodi Jones murder trials, I live in a remote village not too far from Glasgow with a very low number of people living in it. I am shunned by the people of my village as I am a goth, my parents have had the minister round, I was sacked from my job, mothers don't walk their children on the same side of the street as me. It's completly ridiculous, the minister has threatened to send me to the local young offenders institute for doing what? I've smoked some hash? I've had underage sex? I'm a bisexual! Hell its not the first time I've written 666 in my jotters! I have statements like 'The Devil made me do it' or 'smile satan loves you' but I'm not hacking people to pieces am I? My parents and the minister are thinking of shutting down my nightclub also known as the CatHouse and now I'm letting everyone know I'm putting my foot down.

Not sure if anyone can help. I am doing a radio documentary on the goth culture - trying to dispell the myth that has grown since the Luke Mitchell case that goths are always interested in satan and are potentially violent. it would be great to get arguements for and against this. if anyone is interested in being interviewed it would be great to hear from you.

I agree i find it an outrage that goths and rockers are presucuted for there musical prefrences and there style of dress altough this crime disgusted and shocked me and was one of pure evil it doesnt mean every darkly dressed teen is going to go out and slaughter the innocent

When I was in High school I dressed like a goth. I listened to Marilyn Manson all the time. I too made Satanic signs in my school work. Now I am a 20 year old mother of 2. I have beautiful children who are very smart. I still listen to Manson, still dress goth at times. My oldest son is only 3 but he knows right from wrong. He is respectful to everyone. The point is, is that I am doing a really good job raising my kids, I gave up a lot so that I can stay home and school them, so they can get all the attention they deserve. I do all this and love Marilyn Manson, crazy isn't it?

I grew up in the suburbs of London and have a vivid memory of one of my early journeys on the London Underground circa 1980. On the tube were 2 punks/goths dressed in the Siouxie and the Banchees Style. I remember being scared of them and that they smelt of very strong perfume (?). Later I was in a band with a group of goths who needed a singer for 1 gig and they were a collection of social and physical freaks, but it got me over my gothophobia - at the time I was a hippie. I later became a mod and bought decks in 1994 with my friend who was a hippie Aceed Raver who had been attacked as a teenager on a bus in Hull for being a Goth. When he told me of his having been a Goth, I considered it the height of bad taste, but it warmed me up further toward Gothicism. Recently I have attended a Punkvert night in London and wore the Alex from Clockwork Orange Uniform of False eyelashes in my right eye and nail polish on my left hand. Is this Gothic Revival part of a general trend toward Theism? I know little of Goth Music other than that it is Industrial and I like various 80s hits from Goth style bands. When I worked in Our Price I worked with a Bull Lesbob who kept playing Siouxsie stuff which I also liked some of. I remember from that time that NIN was Industrial Music.
I will be DJing soon at Clockwork in King's Cross and want to play something that is relatively contemporary and interesting as I intend to play an eclectic set. I tend to look away from Goth Bands and Metal bands for decent music due to popular Goth music of people like Manson and Placebo being (although catchy) relatively banal and derivative (unless I am wanting to be retro for drunken fools or for my heart).
'Come to Daddy' by Aphex Twin is a 'wicked choon' that would be defined at some kind of 'Techno' by oldskoolers but could also be seen as expressing the teenage angst of Goths.
Can anyone suggest/send me decent Punk / Metal / Industrial electronic and guitar thrash?

IT ISN'T BEING SUGGESTED THAT HE KILLED SIMPLY BECAUSE HE LISTENED TO MARILYN MANSON! Pay attention to the facts! During the investigation it became known that Luke Mitchell was a fan of Marilyn Manson's artwork, shown on his official website. Manson has created portraits based on the death photo of Elizabeth Short in the 1940s (aka the Black Dahlia). Miss Short's injuries depicted in the gruesome photo were almost identical to those that evil sick weirdo Luke inflicted on Jodi - slashing the face from mouth to ear, slashing the breast and stomach. Further evidence such as Luke's mental state (he hoarded bottles of his own urine in his room - a classic sign of psychosis), his knife case with Jodi's initials and the day she died carved into the leather, and many more pieces of evidence led to his conviction! If you're not going to take the time to really look into the facts, there's no point in commenting!

If you had bothered to follow the link and read the BBC article, you would see that was exactly what they were suggesting. I was commenting on the press reaction, not the case itself.

As opposed to actually taking the time to do a properly investigative job, the modern hack instead has to backslide upon scare tactics in order to come up with anything resembling a plausible story.

The first thing you have to ask yourself: What are the reporter's goals? From my standpoint- it should be obvious- he/she is determined to prove that that which he/she doesn't like is source for all of the world's evils.

Here in America, Ted Bundy (the serial killer) tried to use the Pornography defense in an effort to get away from the death penalty- he quickly dropped any claim for it's "evil effects" when it became apparent that outside of the Puritanical forces, no one was going to take him seriously.

One could also make the connection for this young lad and the evils of DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE!!!
