Yeah, we know all about Tool in the Flatlands. I'd be tempted to take the Mild Prince's suggestions on board if I hadn't actually heard Whitesnake. Surely he can't be serious?

Whitesnake are a must of couse but why no Iron Maiden? If you're going to do this, then they have to be there. Though having been a teenager with extraordinarily bad music taste in the late 80s I have to question why you would want to do thhs. And are you sticking to metal, or would you venture into the soft rock area (which is where Whitesnake belong really)? Just how powerful is your desire to not fix the house?

why no Iron Maiden?

As I said, late 80's. Everybody knows that Iron Maiden's glory days were over when Paul Di'Anno left in (I think) 1980.

Cheers guys. I'll check some of this out. I like James Plotkin quite a lot; not so sure about Napalm Death though. The only thing by them I've heard all the way through was a video somebody leant me where it looked like they were playing to an audience of three in a small pub: It was dreadful. On the other hand, Mick Harris drummed for them, and I've been hooked on Painkiller (ho ho) ever since the Mild Prince who'll be a Fool for Your Loving No More first played them to me. So perhaps I'll give them another go.

Queensryche...ahahahahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! brown is right on the money here ....also Slayer, of course; Testament; Coroner; Death (not at all the same thing as Napalm Death); definitely Carcass (although that's going way beyond 'metal') whose album covers feature genuine mortuary photos.
On the cheesier side of things, Saxon were indeed top class english metal - I saw an antiques programme on BBC2 where their ex-guitarist was filmed in his country semi, talking about his collection of chinaware. Rock on!
One of the best thrash bands was Sabbat - they are the White Dwarf Magazine of metal, that's all you need to know
If anyone is willing to supply burnt CDs of the above, email me cos I lost half of em and dumped the other half all in one of those regrettable fits of post-adolescent embarassment. I never did get sophisticated so I may as well get em back again now.

also try to find 'Dimension Hatross' by Voivod - the no 1 french-canadian futurist thrash-metal band. Awesome and weird. The albums before that are OK, but more punky. And afterwards they went shit and pinkfloydy.

I'm fairly sure that I saw Saxon supporting Motorhead way back when. The fact that their bassist was apparently the inspiration for Derek Smalls in Spinal tap gives them a certain appeal...

Carcass going way beyond metal sounds fascinating, and I'll definitely give them a go.

U/C, I'm surprised that you never got sophisticated. Weren't you one of the Cool Kids in Ko:Labs?

I've concluded that my problem is that I'm a serial enthusiast; to be sophisticated you have to be be constant in your connoisseurship, innit?

Without going into too much baroque theoretical detail, I think the thrash/death metal scene was (maybe still is, I dunno) one of the most 'sonically-aware' of the 80s/90s. I realised sometime in the late 90s that my reasons for liking Drum&Bass were actually quite similar to my reasons for liking that stuff, the crazy inventive drive to sonic intensification, the technicality of the rhythms, the sheer discreteness and choppiness of it...it was the impossible mixture of noisy mayhem with total digital (literally digital in Deathmethal, machinically digital in D&B) precision.
Definitely ought to track some down and "give it some Reynolds", create some deathmetal-specific theoretical neologisms.

btw my sincere condolences on the house (having spent the last 2 years desperately trying to put a dysfunctional dwelling to rights, I know that sinking feeling. Never mind, just think when you've finished you'll have a tremendous sense of....er....tiredness and irritability.)
