Popular Music Criticism
Ever one to be up to date with the latest tunes, I’ve been listening to lots of remastered Beatles. I know that people go on about Ringo’s drumming, but it sounds masterly compared to Paul’s bass lines! ‘Thunk, plod, dedum, thunk.’ – Jesus. I mean there was a time when the boy could knock out a reasonable song or two, but providing a solid underpinning for a popular beat combo? I don’t bloody think so.
On the positive side, all this Beatles exposure has reminded me that I have a video of Yellow Submarine knocking around somewhere. I plan to dig it out and expose the Little effay to it because I’m sick of the appalling songs I’m being subjected to in her Disney films (Jungle Book and Aristocats excepted, obviously). I’m sure she’ll be fine with it; in fact I bet she’ll be a lot less disturbed by the Blue Meanies than I am by Bambi...

Ah...yr too cruel...the 'Jungle Book' is way better than 'Yellow Submarine', no? Just imagine it's an acid-fuelled Pretty Things concept album instead...I listened to the Beatles' 'White Album' while reading a book about the Manson family, and analysing the 'hidden' meanings in each track. No wonder they all went mad. Manson used to ban his girls from listening to Jimi Hendrix too cos he was black, what a fucking hippie!

Still, Martin has got a point about making kids listen to The Beatles.
I find they respond much better to The Monkees, who, let's face it, were a far better band (tighter musicians too), especially the soundtrack to 'Head'.

It's alright saying don't let kids listen to The Beatles, but my experiments in teaching her music appreciation have gone somewhat awry. Industrial, black metal, 12 tone, you name it - she now reacts with indifference. The other day I stuck some Magazine on in the car and she said "We don't want to listen to this do we Mum?"
On the other hand, she is displaying a marked interest in Hi Five and songs with (gulp!) special dances to them. If I have to sing along with her to 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' in order to keep her clear of 'The Macarena', I reckon that's a price worth paying.

Another very disappointing bassist, in a band whose sound is a stereotype of 80s new wave motifs where the bass is almost a lead instrument, is him out of Franz Ferdinand. Rumble and plonk doing nothing to lift the songs, this pop combo's songs like Take Me Out could be lifted along a lot better with a bit of low-end invention...

You're spot on about the indifference thing and 'special dances', John....it's my wife who mainly reacts violently to my choices of car CDs, but I hate it when they all gang up on me. I had a similar experience to your Magazine CD situation, but with a cheapo "Best of John Foxx" from Woolies....even shouting "Underpants!" along to the chorus of "Underpass" didn't seem to cheer them up.
The only things we all seem to agree on in the car are "Video Killed the Radio Star" and "Crazy Horses" which is okay for the first 10 plays, but not good for a drive to Cornwall....

Don't get me started on this one! Mrs effay seems to think that, just because she's the only one who can drive, she should have some say in what we should listen to in the car.
Still, as any agony aunt will tell you, compromise is the foundation for a happy marriage, so we generally settle for a combination of The B-52's and Pop Will Eat Itself on the occasional journeys when the Little effay isn't sitting in the back singing along to Humpty Dumpty.
'Crazy Horses' is a good tune, but I prefer Alex Harvey's version.
