Decay

There’s an M. John Harrison story called ‘Running Down’ featuring a character around whom everything decays. This is currently life in the Little House on the Flatlands.

I’ve moaned about the Internet connection before, but yesterday I only got one once and it was 12.8kbps. As if this that wasn’t bad enough, the Ethernet connection between our computers fell over and I’ve spent the last two days trying to make the bloody things talk to each other again.

Over the weekend, there’s a manic yell from the (half-finished) kitchen. I rush in to find that Mrs effay has set fire to the cooker. Not a big fire, happily; just big enough to trash the grill and the oven. No worries, we’ve still got the microwave: It packed in the next day.

I could go on and on, but I don’t want y’all to think that I’m just digging for sympathy. After all, worse things happen at sea, particularly just off the coast of Somalia. Pirates aren’t all that interesting, but the fact that they were repelled with a sonic cannon is just great. Who knew that there were cruise ships with sonic cannons? Doesn’t this make the idea of going on a cruise more enticing? Imagine rigging it up to a CD player, slipping in a copy of Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil, and turning it on the Captain’s table during dinner. Great fun!

Anyhow, I seem to have proper Internet facilities again now but, given the lack of cooking facilities, I’m buggering off to London tomorrow where I shall worship at the shrine of The Cardiacs. More of this drivel when I get back.
