yeah, some of those design jobs are horrible, innit? i tend to buy older versions of books when i can, unless the paper used is even shittier than usual for paperbacks...
like the covers/artwork of "Routledge Classics" a lot better, though! some are dull, but others amazing- look at the blue'n'white simplicity of Yates' "The Occult Philosophy in the Elizabethan Age", for examples of great design...love it!!
