Bloated hate janitor Sharon is making direct and hyperbolic appeals to French Jews to emigrate to Israel, 3,000 left France this week, because of demographics — there are not enough Jews in Israel (despite the recent 80-kilometre-long stretched twig of settler complaint) to justify: a) the existence of the settlements in the Palestinians’ annexed areas; and b) the swivel-eyed fascistic superiority complexes of the (mostly US/Russian Jewish) settlers in Palestinian territory, and whose interests transparently dictate Israeli policy toward the Palestinians. Even without context Sharonite courting of French Jews, cos they are proper Jews, clearly more preferable for Ariel’s master race than Cochin (Indian), Ethiopian or Moroccan Jews, is bad enough. There is an irony in saying that some Jews are more preferable than others. Surely, by this demented rationale, the superiority of the French Jew is because of the host culture in which he has developed. Or maybe it's just a matter of skin colour and assumed resistance to assimilation.
Security-bungler Arafat fits in nicely with these plans, as the Israelis will not talk to any other Palestinian leader while simultaneously laying siege to his Ramallah ‘compound’ (not heard that since the slaughter of the Branch Davidians in Texas) and blaming the failure of the peace process entirely on this expended political entity. Mossad agents (often Arab) are active in stoking the nascent ambition of other, more level headed, Palestinian leaders, while leaking those ambitions to Arafat's loyalist thugs and the more unhinged authoritarian aspirants. From my London information pipe I have absolutely no evidence but a combination of shrinking funding for the Palestinian Authority and an incomprehensible, ever-changing, ever undermined governing structure would suggest that this is the case.
Again, the long-term presentational play by the Israeli political elite (as Peres would be just as harsh to the Palestinians as any Likud head) is for the Palestinians and their territorial claims to die by the hands of the actions of their militants (with accompanying innuendo suggesting this is ‘in their nature’ provided by western media). It will only take one Palestinian militant to assassinate an Israeli politician for 'the only democracy in the Middle East' to call on the UN to sanction refugee camp clearances and apply the anti-Semitic label to any European country who opposes such plans. No doubt the opposition and long-term aims of Egypt and Iran may be driven by rank anti-Semitism (the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, etc) but extremism usually does not reflect the opinion or motivation of the majority. It certainly does reflect the opinion, motivation and aspirations of the Israeli/US political elite, even if some settlers in Samaria and Judea are up in arms against the disengagement plans.
And when a secular Muslim country is surveyed and surveilled senseless and then invaded anyway on the grounds of possession of weapons of mass destruction, the status of Israel as a nuclear nation cannot be seen as separate. The suggestion being obligingly circulated by the liberal media (most recently, the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/elsewhere/journalist/story/0,7792,1272129,00.html) is that ‘left wing’ analysis of the Israel/Palestine Armageddon agenda fuels Muslim extremism. That sort of implied accusation of irresponsibility is a determinedly cuntish development. Pricks like George Galloway (and his love-in with the Muslim Brotherhood via Respect, thus preventing any policy on, for example, abortion other than complete denial) serve nicely as cigar-stained brushes to tarnish any dissent from the indulgent journalistic line toward Israel. Galloway slots in nicely with this personality driven propaganda.

When the Democratic candidate tries to out-hawk Bush on support for Israel, pledges to continue the occupation of Iraq (thanks Tony for your recent climbdown) and says nothing about reversing the basic trends in foreign policy, this is bad news whether it is expedient realpolitik or actual presidential intent.
As an expedient it will fail to work, independents and leftist democrats won’t be impressed, while wavering Republicans would most likely opt for the Yale skull ’n bones man they know. He has also ignored the significant percentage of Jewish Americans who aren’t rabid hawks (like Karl Rove or mobius) and want constructive dialogue (ie, not that behind a huge security wall). They can see through his transparent pro-Israel position as simply pro-Sharon.
If it is intent, well, this will come as no surprise. The differences between democratic and republican presidencies are often minimal and such policies will be seen as an inevitable continuation of decades of immutable post-FDR American policy. Howard Dean’s first visit to Israel a couple of years ago, to ‘assess the situation on the ground (or from a 2nd floor café, whichever’s nicer)’, was paid for by the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee, a sane sounding name masking virulently Sharonite aims. This is a classic US Democrat model – appear ‘radical’ on a (relatively) ‘new’ foreign policy issue (Iraq), while adhering to astonishingly right-wing policies on the traditional, bread and butter, foreign policy issues (Israel-Palestine).
Perhaps Kerry has only just realised that he’s got to toe the line. Rather than appearing to be the truly radical Democratic candidate (in agreement with Dean on Iraq but to the left of him on Israel-Palestine), the anus-mouthed son-of-a-diplomat (“If Bush’s family are gonna be implicated all the time well his darn well ought to be too!” – Sean Haemorrhoids, Pox News) has been called to heel by the Democratic Party hierarchy. Maybe that’s what it took to get Senator John Normal to serve as Vice-Presidential candidate/Sam Neill impersonator.
Yet, there is a groundswell of Democrat opinion urging Kerry not to follow this direction. Influential think-tank zines like Counterpunch and San Francisco-based liberal Jewish organisation tikkun.org will be campaigning at the Democratic National Convention. Tikkun says: “If he really cared about the Jewish people or the well-being of the State of Israel he'd have the courage to challenge the current right-wing policies, challenge the Occupation itself and join with those American Jews and non-Jews who point out that the Occupation and the current policies of the Israeli government are a disaster for Israel and for the Jewish people.”
There is some hope that Kerry would be flexible in government as he does not have the band of rabid Project Americans behind him, but also much doubt whether Kerry has the will, the desire or the power to fundamentally alter the basic tenets of the US’ Middle East policy.
